Winner of the Golden Palm at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, Cristian Mungiu's excruciatingly intense drama takes place in Bucharest in the mid-1980s, as Nicolae Ceaucescu and his evil dictatorship continue to reign. In a country where abortion is illegal, a young college student, Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), is in big trouble. Sure what to do, it becomes your room, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), for help. On the day that the film takes place, the pair is connected with a black market doctor, Bebe (Vlad Ivanov), in order to take care of Gabita of pregnancy - but, of course, is not so simple.

The result shows 24 hours a terrible fall in a world where the possibility of tragedy lurks around every corner. Mungiu's decision to shoot each scene in a hyper-documentary style, over time, unbroken takes (by co-producer Oleg Mutu), ratchets up the tension to almost unbearable proportions. Adding further drama is his decision to focus on the friend, not the victim. Marinca's face, filmed in close-ups company, expresses the impossibly complex flood of emotions that nag him throughout the day. The film revelation of the truth, however, is Ivanov, whose image of the shadow is a doctor of absolute tour-de-force. 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS film is at its most masterful
