Carol Reed reached the peak of his form with this classic noir, an elegy of American innocence and European elegance. Joseph Cotten, in fine form, stars as unemployed pulp-novelist Holly Martins. When he arrived after World War II Vienna on the promise of a job of his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), which finds that Lime has recently died in a dubious car accident. Against the opinion of the authority of the British sector Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), who accuses Lime of criminal conduct, the outrage Martins decides to stay to investigate his friend's death. Wanted in this city, strewn with rubble and bombed buildings in the streets, seriously questioning the lime partners, a cynical, war-weary collection of black-market hustlers. At length, which realizes that the stories that the audiences are so full of contradiction, that is going nowhere. However, the lime became entranced by the beautiful girlfriend, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), which, unlike the others, seems to have loved Harry. Calloway finally provides evidence of treason Harry, and Martins, despondent, is about to return home when everything changed in one moment in the shade. The third man is a masterpiece of melancholy with extraordinary writing, acting and directing, as well as a classic zither score by Anton Karas. Welles is memorable as the seductive villain, but the real star may be the camera work of Robert kraška, which transforms Vienna into a coruscating, expressionist nightmare.
