For generations, residents of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of bright lights - in the basement. Lina, praying with all their might be a messenger, is devastated to be assigned to the Pipeworks, the vast network of pipes beneath the city. His companion, DOON Harrow, who wants nothing more than to work on the generator, panic when they pulled the messenger assignment.
The Pipeworks is not the generator, but it's close enough DOON and offered to exchange assignments with Lina. She is thrilled and grateful impatience with the changes and jobs. Therefore, an unlikely friendship is born, one that, like flowers, is going to change the course of a lifetime in Ember.
